Install Client Software
The first step to the process is installing a small software client called the Online Backup Manager (OBM). Once this client is installed on your system, you can easily navigate the software's menu to select the files you wish to backup. Once the client has been configured it will backup your files on the schedule you've specified.

The Backup Process

The backup process begins with the OBM software on your system selecting the files you instructed it to backup. These files are then encrypted on your system using a cryptographic "key"* (similar to a password) you selected and compressed before they are sent to VBS' data-center.

* VBS does not have the ability to "see" or retrieve your cryptographic key. Make sure you do not forget the cryptographic key you select as you will not be able to restore your information from our systems without it.

It is important to note that while your files are encrypted and compressed locally on your system, VBS takes the extra measure and performs a second pass encryption, using Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology, before the information is transmitted over the Internet.
Backup Completion

Once your backup has been completed, our systems verify the integrity of the data that was backed up. If the integrity of the data is confirmed, then our systems commit the backup. Committed backups are then available to you should you choose to restore one or more files.

Backing up Open Files
Our system and the OBM software have the capability to backup files that are currently in use. This is a great feature and our customers have enjoyed the use of this feature. It is important to note however that the only 100% reliable method to backup a file is while it's not in use - the only exception to this is the supported databases and application specified in the supported systems page. The reason for this is that certain software store a portion of their data on your system's memory as well as your system's hard disk drive.
