OBS - Features

The VBS Online Backup Service (OBS) is a feature rich service. If some of the information below seems highly technical, do not worry, we have taken the time to set the defaults in the application for best security, so you don't have to - rest assured your data is safe with us.

 
Technical Characteristics
  • Volume Shadow Copy backup (Backup of files that are in use i.e. outlook.pst)
  • BitChange (In-File Delta) backup technology backs up only changes made to files down to the bit level. This ensures smaller backups to ensure speed and low backup space utilization saving you time and money.
  • Off-line backup capability and reminder.
  • Support for full backup (database backup) and incremental backup (transaction log backup) for Microsoft SQL Server 7.0/2000, Microsoft Exchange Server 2000/2003, Lotus Domino/Notes 5.0, Oracle 8i or newer and MySQL 3.24 or newer.
  • OBS supports Windows, Mac OS X, NetWare, Unix, Linux and any other platform that supports Java2 Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.3.1 or newer.
  • Incremental backup strategy ensures that only changed information is sent to VBS's service, saving you time and money.
  • Scheduled backup feature allows backup to be run at any time, allowing you to schedule the backup around your busy work schedule.
  • Compress and encrypt data automatically before sending them to the server (server stores only encrypted data)
  • Access your backup information from anywhere and at anytime with just an Internet browser like Internet Explorer.
  • Reporting feature shows the details of each backup that takes place. This report is automatically sent to the e-mail address you provide, shortly after the completion of the backup.
  • Backed up information is checked automatically using a methodology called CRC (Cyclical Redundancy Checking) before it is stored on our servers to ensure backup integrity. Rest assured your data is safe with us.
  • VBS backup policies allow you to easily view files that were backed up even after these files may have been deleted.
  • Easily select the files you wish to backup using filters (i.e. all *.doc, *.xls) with just a few clicks of the mouse.
  • Execute any Operating System (OS) command (including batch files or shell scripts in UNIX-based systems) before or after your backup job.
  • Easy to use Web-based environment.


  
Security
  • Point-to-point SSL (Secure Socket Layer) communication  between your system(s) and ours.
  • Support for HTTP/HTTPS Proxy and Socks v4/v5 firewall.
  • 128-bit encryption of your data on your system(s) prior to them being sent to VBS. The encrypted information is then sent and stored in this form on our systems.
  • You may select from a variety of encryption algorithms, such as AES (Advanced Encryption Standard), 3DES (Triple DES or triple strength Data Encryption Standard), or TwoFish.
  • You may select for two methods of cryptography:ECB (Electronic Cook Book)or CBC (Cipher Block Chaining).  
  • Random initializing vector and salt and iteration count are automatically created when encypting data.
  • You may select to limit access to the OBS portal to specific IP address for further security. (This feature requires you to have a static IP address through your Internet Service Provider (ISP))
